Mat Boulay has worked as an IT Sales Representative at SherWeb since 2017. He manages and onboards clients, and ensures the success of our unique cloud solutions. He recently hit the 1-year mark with us, so we invited him to talk about how the sports industry shaped him for success, his experiences and accomplishments in IT, as well as his ambitions for the future.

Tell us about your pre-SherWeb journey, more specifically, in the sports industry.

Sports has always played a huge role in my family. I was extremely energetic as a kid, and sports helped me spend that energy outdoors or on the field. During my studies at Bishop University in Finance, I was a member of the Bishop’s Gaiters. I decided to continue my football journey in the CFL and played for 5 years in Saskatchewan and Edmonton.

It was right after we won the Grey Cup in 2015 that I decided it was time to hang up the cleats for good. It was the hardest decision I had to make, but I’ll always have the great memories.

How did your experience in football prepare you for IT?

That’s a good question! Football is a team sport that requires a lot of discipline. You have to be a great team player to achieve success.

At SherWeb, it’s no different. There’s a lot of collaboration between different departments because teamwork is what makes a company successful. I’ve always been a high achiever and I like to challenge myself and push past my limits, so I love competing at a high level. In fact, I get almost the same rush of adrenaline in sales situations.

Once you entered the job market, how did you integrate in this environment from a professional perspective?

It was very difficult in the beginning because I had a finance background. At that time, IT was an unknown world to me. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into, but I refused to quit on the challenge.

In your opinion, do you think sports are important for achieving success in IT sales?

Well, it definitely helps. Because I have to talk to clients on a daily basis, there are times when I have to tackle difficult conversations or situations. I like to compare my phone to a football helmet – when I’m on a call with a client, I’m committed to succeed.

Let’s talk about mentoring. Did you have a mentor in your career? If so, how has this person helped you achieve your career goals?

My father is hands down the person I’ve always looked up to. He’s achieved a lot of success in the business world because of his strong work ethic and discipline. He’s taught me how to analyze different scenarios in order to make solid decisions in life.

In terms of professional development, do the challenges proposed by SherWeb meet your expectations (technologies, opportunities for advancement, etc.)?

One of the best things about working at SherWeb has been the opportunity to work in a stimulating environment using the latest technologies in the IT field. Plus they offer ongoing training to support your professional development. Also, the company is growing fast, so there’s plenty of possibilities for advancement across different departments. My goal at the moment is to develop professionally and become a top rep.

What advice would you give to an athlete who’s considering a career in IT?

If you’re ready for a good challenge, I recommend applying for a sales job in IT!
