Could you wire me $3000 via Bank of America?<\/p>\n<p>They gave me a special link so this goes right into my account and I can buy a ticket home:<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.bankofarnerica.com<\/p>\n<p>Thanks so much. This really helps me out!<\/p>\n<p>Your CEO<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h4>Observing the From field<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>I don\u2019t recognize the sender\u2019s email address as someone <strong>I ordinarily communicate with<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>This email is from someone<strong> outside my organization<\/strong> and it\u2019s<strong> not related to my job responsibilities<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>This email was sent from someone <strong>inside the organization<\/strong> or from a <strong>customer, vendor, or partner<\/strong> and is <strong>very unusual or out of character<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Is the sender\u2019s email address from a <strong>suspicious domain<\/strong> (like micorsoft-support.com)?<\/li>\n<li><strong>I don\u2019t know the sender personally<\/strong> and they were<strong> not vouched for<\/strong> by someone I trust.<\/li>\n<li><strong>I don\u2019t have a business relationship<\/strong> nor any past communications with the sender.<\/li>\n<li>This is an <strong>unexpected or unusual email<\/strong> with <strong>an<\/strong> <strong>embedded hyperlink or an attachment<\/strong> from someone I haven\u2019t communicated with recently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Observing the To field<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>I was cc\u2019d on an email sent to one or more people, but <strong>I don\u2019t personally know<\/strong> the other people it was sent to.<\/li>\n<li>I received an email that was also sent to an <strong>unusual mix of people<\/strong>. For instance, it might be sent to a random group of people at my organization whose last names start with the same letter, or a whole list of unrelated addresses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Checking hyperlinks<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>I hover my mouse over a hyperlink that\u2019s displayed in the email message, but the <strong>link-to address is for a different website<\/strong> (this is a <strong>big red flag!<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>I received an email that only has <strong>long hyperlinks with no further information<\/strong>, and the rest of the email is completely blank.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I received an email with a <strong>hyperlink that&#8217;s a misspelling<\/strong> of a known web site. For instance, www.bankofarnerica.com.<\/p>\n<h4>Checking dates<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Did I receive an email that I normally would get during regular business hours, but it was <strong>sent at an unusual time<\/strong> like 3 a.m.?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Observing the subject line<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Did I get an email with a subject line that is <strong>irrelevant<\/strong> or <strong>does not match<\/strong> <strong>the message content<\/strong>?<\/li>\n<li>Is the email message a reply to something <strong>I never sent or requested<\/strong>?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Observing attachments<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>The sender included an email attachment that <strong>I wasn&#8217;t expecting<\/strong> or that <strong>makes no sense<\/strong> in relation to the email message.<\/li>\n<li>This sender doesn\u2019t ordinarily send me this type of attachment.<\/li>\n<li>I see an attachment with a possibly <strong>dangerous file type <\/strong>(the only file type that is always safe to click on is a .txt).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Checking the content<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Is the sender asking me to click on a link or open an attachment to <strong>avoid a negative consequence<\/strong> or to <strong>gain something of value<\/strong>?<\/li>\n<li>Is the email <strong>out of the ordinary<\/strong>, or does it have bad grammar or spelling errors?<\/li>\n<li>Is the sender asking me to<strong> click a link<\/strong> or <strong>open up an attachment<\/strong> that <strong>seems odd<\/strong> or <strong>illogical<\/strong>?<\/li>\n<li>Do I have an <strong>uncomfortable gut feeling<\/strong> about the sender\u2019s request to open an attachment or click a link?<\/li>\n<li>Is the email asking me to look at a <strong>compromising or embarrassing picture<\/strong> of myself or someone I know?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How can I protect myself from phishing email?<\/h2>\n<p>Because many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sherweb.com\/blog\/o365-ransomware-online-backup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ransomware infections start with an email<\/a>, you need to make sure your email system runs fine-tuned, anti-phishing policies.
