{"id":16041,"date":"2018-06-13T22:22:52","date_gmt":"2018-06-14T02:22:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sherweb.com\/blog\/?p=16041"},"modified":"2018-07-20T08:43:24","modified_gmt":"2018-07-20T12:43:24","slug":"how-to-use-chatbots-azure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sherweb.com\/blog\/cloud-server\/how-to-use-chatbots-azure\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Use Chatbots in Microsoft Azure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In previous posts, we covered various topics in Azure and explored some of the core offerings from raw computing capability and storage plus compared how Azure stacks up against other major cloud offerings such as Amazon\u2019s AWS and Googles Cloud Platform.<\/p>\n<p>In this blog post, we look at Azure again; specifically, how the platform lets developers build and support chatbots at scale.\u00a0 Whether you\u2019re new to chatbots or already have some experience, we\u2019re sure you\u2019ll find some new insights.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/info.sherweb.com\/5-Cloud-Trends-Azure.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here to download our free ebook and learn more about the top trends for Microsoft Azure<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Building Chatbots with the Bot Framework<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Before diving into Azure services that let you easily provision chatbots and infrastructure, it\u2019s worth mentioning the Bot Framework.\u00a0 It\u2019s a development framework that gives developers the required components and pipeline that make it simple to build intelligent chatbots.<\/p>\n<p>No matter which type of chatbot you want to build, whether it be a customer service bot or support assistant, you have key tasks and problems to resolve such as<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\/O interface<\/li>\n<li>Language processing<\/li>\n<li>Connecting users<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Bot Framework helps alleviate headaches associated with these tasks and can reduce your development time as it ships with a rich API that contains classes such as Dialogues helping your business model human conversations in an easy-to-understand way.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Language Understanding Intelligence Service (LUIS)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A vital feature of a chatbot involves the complex task of human language processing, and users expect to be able to use natural language as opposed to computer commands that a more technically-minded person might understand.<\/p>\n<p>Applying this sort of intelligence to software applications used to be reserved for academics or computer scientists, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sherweb.com\/blog\/what-is-microsoft-azure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Azure<\/a> makes this easy.\u00a0 Through the Azure Portal, you can provision a Cognitive Service called LUIS (the <em>Language Understanding Intelligence Service<\/em>), and in minutes, Azure generates an endpoint that you can quickly integrate with your existing applications to give them language understanding capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16042\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sherweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chatbot-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"605\" height=\"388\" srcset=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chatbot-1.png 605w, \/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chatbot-1-300x192.png 300w, \/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chatbot-1-600x385.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 605px) 100vw, 605px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can even build and train LUIS applications through a web interface by supplying Intents, Utterances, and Entities.\u00a0 You can visit the LUIS website <a href=\"http:\/\/luis.ai\/\">here<\/a> if you want to learn more about these concepts and how to apply them to your unique chatbot requirements.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Publishing and Hosting chatbots in Azure<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>After you build your chatbot and train it to understand human language, you next need to test it.\u00a0 During development (assuming you are using Visual Studio), it\u2019s advised to use the Bot Framework Emulator. This is a local application that can be downloaded and run on a developer\u2019s machine so you can debug and interact with your chatbot.<\/p>\n<p>It is a standalone application, and by running it and supplying your chatbot\u2019s endpoint, your chatbot will spring into life, and you can interact with it.\u00a0 When you\u2019re satisfied that your chatbot is behaving as expected in your development environment, it needs to be deployed to Azure to thoroughly test it in the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>Deploying to Azure is easy from Visual Studio, and can be done in a few clicks. \u00a0It will even auto-configure the required services and Resource Groups in your Azure account if they don\u2019t already exist!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Testing Chatbots in Azure<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>With your chatbot deployed to Azure, you can start to configure the different types of Channels that you chatbot will access.\u00a0 A Channel is a communication mechanism that interacts with your chatbot.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16048\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sherweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chatbot-2-1.png\" alt=\"Azure Chatbot\" width=\"772\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chatbot-2-1.png 772w, \/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chatbot-2-1-300x167.png 300w, \/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chatbot-2-1-768x428.png 768w, \/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chatbot-2-1-600x334.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 772px) 100vw, 772px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From the Azure Portal, you can add as many Channels as you like which include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Skype<\/li>\n<li>Slack<\/li>\n<li>SMS<\/li>\n<li>Web Chat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many chatbots are accessed via websites, and as such, by default, your chatbot will be registered with the <em>Web Chat Channel<\/em>.\u00a0 From the Azure Portal, you can even test your published chatbot:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16044\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sherweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chatbot-3.png\" alt=\"Azure Chatbot\" width=\"962\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chatbot-3.png 1157w, \/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chatbot-3-300x137.png 300w, \/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chatbot-3-768x351.png 768w, \/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chatbot-3-1024x468.png 1024w, \/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chatbot-3-600x274.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 962px) 100vw, 962px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If your chatbot is behaving as expected in the Azure Test Web Chat blade, next, you\u2019ll likely want to access your chatbot from a website.\u00a0 Again, Azure makes this simple as it gives you the script that you need to embed the chatbot on the website of your choice.<\/p>\n<p>By going into the Bot Management Blade and selecting Channels -&gt; Web Chat -&gt; Edit, Azure will provide you with the HTML you need to add to your website.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16045\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sherweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chatbot-4.png\" alt=\"Chatbot Azure\" width=\"862\" height=\"496\" srcset=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chatbot-4.png 862w, \/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chatbot-4-300x173.png 300w, \/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chatbot-4-768x442.png 768w, \/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chatbot-4-600x345.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The webchat control can be customized, but that\u2019s beyond the scope of this blog post.
