You might have heard that Microsoft released Exchange 2019, the latest version of its incredibly popular email and collaboration tool. This new version boasts a number of new security and performance features that will help your small business be more productive and keep you safe from security threats. Want to see what’s under the hood for Exchange 2019? Let’s take a look.

Why Exchange 2019 is more secure

Ask any business owner to name his biggest concern and chances are, he’ll start talking data security. Microsoft has beefed up security for Exchange 2019 to make it even harder for hackers to target your business email and documents. One of the ways Microsoft makes Exchange 2019 more secure is by installing it on a new platform, Windows Server 2019 Server Core. This doesn’t mean anything to most people, but this platform is better for security because it reduces the surface that can be targeted by hackers. Fewer lines of code are needed to run the platform, so it’s more difficult for a hacker to find a vulnerable spot.

Improved performance

Microsoft has also re-engineered Exchange 2019 to make it even faster than the previous versions. This means you’ll get better results. Because of new hardware developments, Exchange 2019 will support up to 48 CPU cores and has 256GB of memory. In comparison, Exchange 2016 supports only 24 CPU cores and has 192GB of memory. This means larger organizations will be able to deploy fewer Exchange servers to save on licensing and reduce power consumption in their data centers.

What’s new in calendars

Let’s take a look at the user experience. What will you and your staff get out of Exchange 2019? Well, if your company is a heavy calendar user, you’ll find a lot of new features for the Do Not Forward and Out of Office functions plus new Default End Dates for recurring meetings. Here are a few examples:

  • Do not forward: You can set meeting parameters so attendees won’t be able to forward the invitation to someone else
  • Out of office: You can set up automatic replies for a specific period to:
    • Block your calendar
    • Refuse new meeting invitations
    • Cancel meetings
  • Default end dates: When you create a recurring series of meetings, you can set a default end date instead of just leaving the end-date open.
